    50 things about me

    October 20, 2008

    1. I’m a mother of two girls, Germaine age 7 and Geanyne age 2 age 12 and 7.
    2. I am a size 16 which is like, absolutely shocking in Singapore because everyone else is size 00. Thankfully I am 1.69m tall, which evens out the fats. At least I like to think so.
    3. I love to eat, drink and be merry, which explains my impounding size.
    4. I am a Scorpio/ Saggitaurus cusp. My birthday is real easy to remember: 22/11. I forgot the year.
    5. I have zilch patience for stupidity, hypocrisy, arrogance and high falutin’ nonsense.
    6. Have I already said I do not have any tolerance for people who are pretentious, full of themselves and flaunt what they do not possess? Honey, if you have to flaunt it so desperately, you are not quite there yet.
    7. I try my best to instill good values in my daughters, especially that of filial piety. Mother is best. Mother is best. Mother is best.
    8. I went to Anglican High School which was one of the most grueling experience of my life, to say the least. Please feel free to recommend this school to the people you detest.
    9. I love my primary school, Bedok View Primary School. It has, sadly, been removed from the face of Singapore. Like so many other things that we love.
    10. I wish I could be a stay at home mum working tai tai.
    11. I am afflicted by the sins of vanity and luxe gluttony.
    12. I am also afflicted with the sin of gourmet gluttony. Thankfully I stuff my face gracefully, if indeed there is such a contradiction. Take no prisoners.
    13. I play the piano reasonable well, having been trained since age 4. My mum didn’t have the opportunity to learn when she was young but she had the foresight and tenacity to send me for classes.
    14. The transliteration of my Chinese name is Beautiful Kindness *gag*.
    15. I detest the smell of cigarette smoke. I detest people smoking around me or my children. And most of all, I detest seeing pregnant women smoking or mothers smoke around their kids.I respect my friends’ choices if they do choose to smoke but they also respect me by moving away when they smoke. Having said all that, I do enjoy a social stick/ cigar. Weird, huh?
    16. I have an inexplicable affair with books. There’s nothing more I love than to curl up in my sofa with a hot cuppa and a good book.
    17. My favourite colours are red and white. Such a patriot, I know.
    18. I am adverse to heat because I sweat buckets. It’s extremely unglamourous.
    19. I don’t know how to drive. Too much to do, too little time. With my short fuse, it is also better that way.
    20. I prefer older men to young chaps.
    21. That doesn’t mean I like married old farts.
    22. I am a visualist and a olfactorist. That is to say, I cannot abide ugly or smelly things.
    23. I have a broad fleshy face and nose that fengshui people delightfully proclaim as “wealth”. It is however too wealthy for the lens of the camera.
    24. I am very impatient. And I especially hate it when people block my way. I am like, DO YOU PLAN TO HAVE A PICNIC IN FRONT OF ME. My pastor says it’s a test.
    25. I got A* for my English and Science and A for my Maths and Chinese. The rest, I deserve, but A for Chinese?! Where did THAT come from?
    26. I desperately wanted to go to RGS or SCGS where the cool girls are but mum put her foot down. She was too impressed with the toady nerds she saw at AHS.
    27. I aced English, English Literature and Music in O Levels but flunked Chinese as First Language and A Maths. Got B for Chinese as Second Language though. It was a scandal that rocked the school. No one ever got less than an A2 for any subject. Shocker.
    28. I moved out at 17 to be independent. I rented my own studio, kept house and learned to cook. I was a total maverick. Sarah P would approve.
    29. Tempted by ads of the high life (pardon the pun) in the skies, I flew with the national carrier for lesser than a year when I realized there was ahem, a bun in the oven.
    30. I should have listened to my inner voice when I was hesitant to go ahead with the marriage. In any case, I like to think that I had walked out of an abusive marriage a much stronger, tougher and independent person.
    31. Popped Germs, the first offspring via elected Caesarean section. She wouldn’t turn and my gynecologist wouldn’t let me try. She was a breastfed baby, but only through expressed feeds. The nurse mistakenly gave her a bottle at the beginning and that’s that.
    32. Hatched Gean the second offspring in a totally surreal drugs-free natural birth with no medical intervention. You bet I still Brag (yes, capital B) about it till today. I had the full works of labour for eight hours until she decided that she had enough of waterworks. I promptly put her to my breast. She proved to be a complete natural at breastfeeding. Still at it till date she was three.
    33. I like to cross stitch and crochet/ knit small or functional items. Think bibs, tissue boxes, hand towels, clocks etc.
    34. I am making time to go for dressmaking classes in 2010. About time, I say.
    35. I own a business hobby retailing and wholesaling ladies’ apparel and accessories. It is now in transition to stock plus size items at XtraLicious.com. XL.. get it?
    36. I was working as a PA for almost 16 years.
    37. I dabble in a bit of writing and teaching.
    38. I started writing for The Online Citizen in 2008 with the purpose of articulating an alternative voice. They are not, as some shallow bimbo put it, always slamming the gahmen.
    39. I call a spade a spade and if pushed to, will substantiate concrete evidence as to why I called the spade a spade. In other words, I stand by what I say and I don’t give a rat’s ass about maintaining a “good” or “popular” image. Though I can hardly be bothered to these days.
    40. I have a few select friends - I am a naturally private person.
    41. I used to be too blunt for my own good. I still am sometimes.
    42. I enjoy a drink every now and then but I despise binge drinking.
    43. I don’t have confidence or self esteem issues and neither am I arrogant. If anything, I welcome constructive feedback which I try to learn from. I can however discern the difference between constructive feedback and cattiness disguised in the form of “concern”.
    44. I tend to muse over the way I handled issues and situations and analyze if I could have handled it better.
    45. I can’t skate. Oh, the shame. Ah well, I can carry a tune well.
    46. I tend to forgive easily. A sincere apology and a sincere undertaking not to repeat the same mistake is all it takes. That being said, a tendency to abuse this trait of mine will cause the offender to be exorcised out of my life permanently. Also, I dislike tremendously, people who do not know the meaning and courtesy of an apology.
    47. My family and friends are important to me. Mess with them and I will take you down like the rat that you are.
    48. I do not like people in general, though I like children.
    49. I am running out of things to say.
    50. Fifty! There, I am done.
